How Do Underground Gutter Drains Work?

Underground gutter drains are a network of precisely placed pipes that channel water away from your home and property. An underground gutter drain system helps protect your foundation and reduces the odds of flooding on your property better than conventional gutters and downspouts.

While high-quality gutters and downspouts collect and move water from the roof of your home or business, they can end up pooling at the opening of drains, leading to serious water damage. Adding an underground drainage installation is one surefire way to get the water a safe distance from your building.

How Does an Underground Gutter Drain Installation Work?

Every project is different, but generally, underground drainage installations include the following steps:

  1. Mark the path and check for buried utility lines.
  2. Dig a sloped trench from the downspout to the exit.
  3. Connect an adapter to the bottom of your gutter.
  4. Lay the drainage pipe into the trench.
  5. Attach a pop-up emitter at the end of the pipe.
  6. Run water through the system to check the flow.
  7. Refill the trench and test out the system.

Underground Drainage System FAQs

How do I know if my underground drainage system needs repairs?

Even though the pipes are all contained underground, you can look for these specific symptoms that are easily noticeable. If you see any of these, give us a call:

  • A back-up of water near the downspout
  • Areas of air and water bubbling up in the yard
  • Steadily pooling water
  • Slow draining at the street after heavy rains

What kind of maintenance do these systems require?

Underground drains are generally low-maintenance, but not “no-maintenance.” We recommend:

  • Cleaning your roof gutters regularly to prevent debris from entering the underground pipes.
  • Checking the pop-up emitters for clogs or grass overgrowth.
  • Annual flushing with a garden hose to ensure no sediment has built up at the bottom of the line.

Do I need a permit for an underground drainage installation in Portland or Vancouver?

In many cases, simple residential drainage that terminates on your own property does not require a permit. However, if the system connects to a municipal storm sewer or involves significant grading near property lines, specific city codes apply.

If so, we can help you with any permitting requirements.

Can underground drainage pipes freeze during the winter in the Portland-Vancouver area?

It’s unlikely but not impossible.

Because our systems are sloped to be “dry” (meaning water flows through and doesn’t sit in the pipe), the risk of freezing is very low. Additionally, the pop-up emitters we use are designed to be pushed open by water pressure, which prevents ice from sealing the exit point.

How deep do you bury underground drainage pipes?

While depth can vary based on the slope of your yard, most underground drainage pipes are buried between 12 to 18 inches deep.

This ensures they are deep enough to be protected from lawn care equipment (like aerators) and foot traffic, but shallow enough to maintain a proper downward slope for gravity-fed drainage.
